The Top 50 iPhone Applications
April 28, 08 by DougIf you’re looking for the best iPhone Applications in the App Store, then click here for the best free apps or click here for the best paid apps.
The list below is the top 50 applications for the jailbroken iPhone and iPod Touch. If you’re looking for a top list of ‘official iPhone apps’ then refer to the 2 links at the top of this post.
I have taken the data from the iPhone Apps you all have rated. . .tweaked the list a little(adding some apps not listed here). . .and here is the massive list.
Did your favorite application not make the list of Best iPhone Apps. . .or did your favorite application not rank as well as you would have hoped(this is inevitable). Leave a comment below and I will take this into account for future posts. You can also rate your favorite(or least favorite) iPhone Apps here. Your votes will help determine the outcome of the next list of best iPhone applications(just like this one).
. . .and now, the list. . .
50 – LEDBanner
This is a fun application that will turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into a scrolling LED Banner. Customizable to scroll any text that you set.
49 – PhotoDial
Call your contacts by finding their photo.
48 – iCube
Now you have a virtual Rubix’s Cube to play when on-the-go no matter where you are.
47 – MPG
It’s nice to know the average MPG that your vehicle gets. . .especially since the older cars don’t do this for you already.
46 – iPhoneHome
For those that want to customize the function of double tapping the home button. This is your application. Change it so that when you double tap home, it will open a specific application that you want.
45 – BossTool
When you run out of space to install applications. . .BossTool is here to help. This will move all of your applications to another partition(media). Once you do this you can install hundreds more(depending on the size of your device).
44 – InstaFresh
If you don’t want to wait 1-5 minutes until Installer finishes refreshing it’s sources(which is done every 12 hours). . .then this application is for you! This will let you set the time interval between refreshes(or not even at all).
43 – SugarTracker
This is very useful if you or someone close has Diabetes. With this application you can monitor and track their sugar/insulin levels. It even calculates report averages.
42 – colloQ
This is a community updated version of Colloquy. . .which is an IRC client for your iPhone or iPod Touch.
41 – VNsea
Now you can control your computer from your iPhone or iPod Touch. Install a VNC server on the one you want to control and setup the details in your device.
40 – My eBay
39 – Flashlight
This is a great application if you need a quick. . .and bright. . .source of light.
38 – iCrossword
This is a great portable Crossword ‘client’ for your iPhone and iPod Touch. Now if they would only release new ‘puzzles’.
37 – PuzzleManiak
You can’t beat 25+ puzzle games with online leader boards.
36 – HistoryDL
HistoryDL lets you go through the history of MobileSafar. . .and download things directly to your iPhone. Download images, music, videos, text and more. . .
35 – VoiceNotes
Record brief messages to your iPhone for future reference.
34 – NetChess
What is better than online chess?
33 – FiveDice
This was one of the first games released on the iPhone and iPod Touch and it has done well and holding up over time.
32 – Pianist
Play a piano right on your device. Scroll left and right to get to all of the keys.
31 – Poof
Use this application to hide all of the icons that you don’t need to see. Great tool for cleaning up your home screen.
30 – Wallpaper
This is 1 the 2 great ‘web 2.0′ applications for the iPhone community. This shares everyone’s wallpaper. . .and allows anyone to not only download other wallpapers, but also lets you comment on the set of shared wallpapers.
29 – Collage
This is web 2.0 application 2 of 2. This one lets you share specific photos(of yours). . .browse photos(of the community). . .and even vote whether or not you like it or not.
28 – ThemeBuilder
I haven’t reviewed this application yet but this is a great one. This allows you to not only create new themes. . .but also edit a previously downloaded theme.
27 – Books
Everyone(at least I do) needs an eBook reader. Reading books on your iPhone and iPod Touch is really nice.
News of the first emulator(NES) for the iPhone spread like wildfire. . .and they just keep coming. Even the PSX emulator had an update recently giving it the ability to play most games(and well too).
25 – Drummer
This application got famous for being featured in the music video ‘iBand’. . .click here to see how cool this application can be.
24 – Tetris
Touch and Slide Tetris FTW!
23 – iSolitaire
Much like the Tetris game above. . .there’s just something about moving the cards around like that.
22 – Touchpad Pro
Based off the VNsea code. . .install TightVNC onto your machine and then you can control your mouse cursor right from the iPhone screen.
21 – iRadio
Streaming radio. . .no matter where you are. With hundreds(literally) of genres to choose from. . .there’s emough music for everyone.
20 – BossPrefs
Toggle your services on or off right from one location. It also gives you a customizable dock at the bottom.
19 – Stack
Add some eye candy to the dock on your iPhone and iPod Touch. Set the stack to come straight up. . .or curved to the left.
18 – NOIZ2SA
The first 2d side scrolling shooter for the iPhone. This game had me addicted for days. . .it gets really difficult toward the end. Each level has a boss too.
17 – rRootage
Sort of like the 2d shooter above. . .but this one gives you ‘bombs’ to protect you. And you just fight one boss after another.
16 – Pool
1P vs 2P and 1P vs CPU. How cool would online play be?
15 – Yeti3D
The first FPS for the iPhone and iPod Touch. I hear Quake and Doom is being ported right now. . .I think this one will keep the FPS fans busy until those are released.
14 – Sketches
This is like Paint + Etch-a-sketch. Export your drawings to twitter, email, or save it for later.
13 – Categories
Organize all of those application in set categories. I used this a lot until multiple home pages came out. I still have 2 categories for misc applications/icons.
12 – Apollo
The first native instant messenger application for the iPhone. With thousands of thousands still using this. I think this is the #1 most downloaded application. . .ever.
11 – Tap Tap Revolution
This was another one of those great applications that was released very early. There is even a ‘Guitar Hero’ mod for this application. It can even use some of your own music to play the game.
. . .and the top 10 iPhone Applications are. . .
. . .drum roll. . .
10 – Customize
This is the application that lets you change any and every little thing on your device. Don’t like the battery icon? Customize it. Don’t like the wifi/edge/power icons? Customize it. With more and more people releasing ‘image packs’. . .this application just gets better and better.
09 – Summerboard
Much like the Customize application, this one lets you change the way your iPhone and iPod Touch looks. Change the icons, wallpaper, dock, and more with this one.
08 – Caterpiller
This application adds another section in your settings area. In there you can set a plethora of misc settings. You could look at this as ‘Settings 2.0′. . .it’s what Apple should have let you do from the beginning. This is a great application.
07 – MobileCast
Another feature that should have been there by default. This application lets you download your audio and video podcasts on-the-go. You don’t have to sync your podcasts through iTunes anymore.
06 – Snapture
This is like the Camera Pro application. . .but free. I imagine most of these features will be added(to the stock camera app). . .but until then, we have Snapture.
05 – smartRSS
I recently switched from MobileRSS to smartRSS. The GUI of this application is much better. Making it much easier to control.
04 – MxTube
Download your favorite YouTube videos for playback where ever you are. You don’t even need to be connected to the internet(great for iPod Touch owners). . .especially if you don’t want to use up your data plan watching YouTube videos over and over.
03 – Twinkle or MobileTwitter
Both of these applications are great for your Twitter usage. Don’t use all of your text messages on Twitter! Twinkle even uses your location to tweet with people around you. MobileTwitter has an ‘auto refresh’ feature which is great.
02 – Fring
I haven’t had a chance to test this application yet, but I hear great things. This is your Skype application you have been waiting for.
01 – iPhysics
I have to say this is the greatest game ported to the iPhone. The community really got behind this application with the dozens and dozends of custom level packs for this game.

Great list!
My personal favorites (in no particular order) are:
-Wiki2Touch
This app, for me, more than justifies the cost of my iPod Touch.
-ToDoList2
Excellent ToDo app, but my only complaint is that you can’t move ToDo’s from category to category. Enable that, and you’ll have a killer app.
-weDict
-Books
-MACalc

My favorite would have to be the Books app. I read a lot on my iPod Touch.

Doug Says: 03.10.08 at 2:08 am
@Soldier, actually it was just updated. I will be doing a review of the update soon.

It’s a great website
but i have a problem how can i install an application from the itunes to the iphone?
rob Says: 11.11.08 at 5:05 pm
I have one that’s better than #50 – LED Banner — “iFlashNote” – Tap a common phrase on the list and it scales full screen so you can have a conversation across a room. or just say “OMG”. create your own custom phrases too.
Patrick Says: 17.11.08 at 12:08 pm
Any apps that are actually productive or useful? Wallpaper changes?
samwize Says: 03.12.08 at 3:36 am

Conor Says: 09.12.08 at 4:39 pm
Are all these apps free? and where do i get them?
Shaun Says: 11.12.08 at 2:43 pm
mxTube is great, but you can only get if you are running Cydia unfortunately…
Tonster Says: 23.12.08 at 2:54 pm
They need to have a program that you can download to your iPhone that will let you download custom apps so you don’t have to go around searching for all the good ones
Will Says: 28.12.08 at 11:39 am
This article was a joke. I searched the app store for several of these, and found ‘no matches’. Further, when selecting photo from article, there was not enough info (app designer, company, specific category) to find several of the suggested apps. This article sucked donkey! W
Zharko Says: 15.01.09 at 1:55 pm
Some really cool apps here, however i’d also put the Storyz app into this list, and also Shazam

Just downloaded an app called “Punked” and it is hilarious. It is very random, but definitely good for a laugh, I find myself with the sound clips stuck in my head. Also you can remote detonate it with a phone call or text message so that the sound clips go off. One of the slips says “Tube Steak” real loud – hilarious!!!
WishICouldFindThese Says: 06.02.09 at 10:03 pm
I have to agree… this post sucked ass. Half of the apps are pointless and the ones I was interested in, I couldn’t find any fucking where. Really douche?… you put the LED banner as one of the top 50? how old are you, 8? How bout putting some useful applications. I definitely agree with dougpacksfudge…. you should kill yourself before the real world finds out you exist. I don’t know how long you have been “blogging” but you should stop…. now. You need to take some lessons how to create a blog post.
Such as:
1) actually putting shit people would want to see
2) learning how to not be a fudge packer
3) CREATING LINKS TO THE SHIT YOU ARE REVIEWING (use the anchor tag!)
4) getting off your knees and moving away from the cock

“It’s nice to know the average MPG that your vehicle gets. . .especially since the older cars don’t do this for you already.”
Actually my “old car” a 1986 Bmw 325e comes stock with a real time mpg gauge built into the odometer cluster. My 1983 Mercedes Benz 300sd has cruise control even.
Germans should make more apps… ie: Linux
anyway,
Also I have to agree…. LED banner, are you serious?
I love how all the sudden when apple comes out with something… all the fanboys and girls come out of the woodwork and start blogs about it. half the time they don’t know what their talking about. 9 out of 10 of these top apps websites I’ve visited have recommended crappy apps or crapps. I bet 90% never owned a smart phone before this (like a palm treo). Now they are all pros about software and what makes a good app.
Doug, in your defense.
You posted this a while ago and I know your choices have probably since changed. This isn’t necessarily directed at you, albeit I don’t have any use for most of the apps you listed or have found better versions. I write these things for others to read.

You need “jailbreaks” the iphone and install Cydia to get most of these or else… Google.
Notice his top 50 was posted on April-28-2008, and here you are screaming, spanking.. etc. at a 10 months old post? There were many changes since, dude!

Guys saying they can’t find any of the apps, I’m not going to be mean or anything like these OTHER people, but these apps are all for jailbroken iPods and iPhones, meaning they aren’t on the App Store. You can google “jailbreak ipod touch” or “jailbreak iphone” to find out what jailbreaking is exactly if you don’t already know.

Great review, checking out 50 apps should not be easy!! However I think you should add Maestro to the list. It’s definitely one of the best apps for the iPhone or iPod touch, when it comes to music composition. Just imagine writing music via drag and drop and saving, loading or sharing by MusicXML (industry standard). I think it’s amazing. Also, just $0.99. When I saw it I couldn’t believe such a great app could be available in that prize!!!
iPhone Application Developers Says: 11.03.10 at 5:12 am
iPhone App Market is really getting popular just after the releasing of iPhone 3G and now iPad have also potential to stay in and interact with iPhone developers. Which i think is really an amazing changed. Thanks
