In fact I was not in DFU mode
Found an easy way to access it
Press Power and Home until you hear the sound that USB is unplugged
Release Power
Wait to hear the sound of USB plugged
Release Home

Hi guys,
I am stuck at step 9,10,11
I put the phone in DFU mode, turn on Itunes... but Itunes doesn't see the iphone 3G...
Did I miss something?
I tried to do that without DFU but when I press shift and click on Restore my PC is freezing for 5 minutes and then wants to restore the iphone without asking for the ipsw

Any ideas?
Thank you

Sorry for posting prior to reading all the post.... @noster that was the trick needed to get the carrier to work. I re-built the IPSW without (Activate Phone) and it worked like a charm. Many thanks to you @Doug for helping all of us here. Take care all!

Just winpwn my 1st gen phone. Got the error 6 in Itunes several times. Found the best setting that actually worked was all the ticks in the right place but do not add custom logos. Worked for me in the end. Good luck to you all.....

Nick, error 6 comes when you try to downgrade and the iphone is not in DFU mode.

Go to http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034 and follow the instructions to put your iphone in DFU and that will solve the problem...

I have just jailbroken my 1st generation 2.0.1 iphone. I have the Cydia and Installer application and it seems like the jailbreak process using Winpwn 2.0.4 went well. I was able to restore my contacts, from a previous restore point, however I seem to get no service nor does it recognize my carrier. How to I fix this problem. Also is my iphone now unlocked or will that take another process, and if so does anyone know how to go about it? Thank you.
