WinPwn, Installer 4 & Error 6

It seems that there is an issue with restoring their custom firmware with WinPwn. I keep hearing that iTunes is giving a ‘error 6′ message, resulting in a failed jailbreak. I never got this error, but would like to try to help anyone who did.
If you were able to get past the error 6 issue, please respond in the comments and let us know how you did it.
Maybe we can get some sort of trial and error troubleshooting going on.
Update 1 - It seems that one big reason that users are getting the Error 6 issue is because the device hasn’t been put into DFU mode properly. Please make sure to put your iPhone or iPod Touch into DFU mode(not restore mode).
Update 2 - Another reason you could be getting this error is because of a bad download(IPSW file). If you are still getting this error, try deleting, and re-downloading the firmware file.
Update 3 - If you are getting a no service error then it is because you clicked the activation option, and didn’t need to(you’re already on AT&T).

Hasn’t happened to me (knock on wood)

No, but I got “error 1601″ and “error 1602″. The only way to fix it once happens (as Apple instructs) is to totally remove iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Mobile drivers and Apple update (including deleting c:\program files\itunes) and installing again. So far I’ve been unable to install the last jailbreak, some people on other blogs are reporting that putting the iPhone on iBoot mode instead of the other mode works; I’ve to try it.

My friend got the error when he tried restoring his iphone in Restore mode, but when he got it in DFU mode the installation went on perfectly

well i posted this on the other thing but here ya go =D
“ok i was in a huge rut and tried pwning my phone about 25 times
this morning i did some research and found out that WinPwn.com has a guide from bigboss on it and i followed it
i have a 1st gen iphone 2g with AT&T and for the advanced tab of the winpwn i unlicked everything, clicked both cydia and installer 2.0, i did custom boot images and made partition 550
also the only other thing that i can see that was different than the other 20+ attempts was i got the same number and size firmware from a different place (modmyifone)
hope this helps”

I have an 8GB iPod Touch with 2.0.1 installed and quite a lot of Apps on the device.
After doing the WinPwn procedure and putting the Touch in DFU mode, I got the Error 6 after some time. I tried a couple more times, but no success. Even a reboot was fruitless.
I then restored to the original, untouched 2.0.1 FW (which took aaaages), and right after that did another restore to the custom FW, which then worked.
I’m currently syncing apps and music.

Got the 16gb Ipod Touch with iPod1,1_2.0.1_5B108_Restore software installed. I placed my Ipod Touch in DFU mode and did the winpwn_2.0.0.4_Setup to get Custom-iPod1,1_2.0.1_5B108_Restore. I got error 6 the first time. So I waited 10 seconds and try again and it worked.
Chris Says: 10.08.08 at 8:39 pm
Yes this has been the MAIN cause of my failed jailbreak EVERYTIME I’ve tried. I’ve followed EVERY instruction EXACTLY but still get the message. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I got the error 6, too and tried too many times. After reading some forums, the problem, with me at least, was getting into DFU mode. When you press and hold the Power and Home buttons for 10 secs or so, you wil get the iTunes and cable image and I thought that my Ipod was in DFU mode already. At this point, I continued pressing and holding the Power and Home buttons until the screen turns off. That’s when I let go of the Power button. The Ipod screen didn’t show anything. Keep on holding the power button until the Ipod is connected to iTunes and recognizes that you want to restore the Ipod. Then shift-click the Restore button and locate the custom firmware that WinPwn generated. This worked for me and I finally got my 2.0.1 firmware jailbroken.
HTH
phmz Says: 10.08.08 at 8:46 pm
Oops…what i meant was, keep on pressing and holding the Power and Home buttons until the screen turns off. Let go of the Power button, and keep on pressing the HOME BUTTON until your iPod connects to iTunes. The screen should not show anything.
Sorry for the mistake.

I too got it, BUT it was simply not getting into DFU mode and getting into restore, once I got into the right place, it was a breeze.
super_porro_man Says: 10.08.08 at 9:35 pm
sí entras en modo dfu no debe de haber problema.ya he puesto el jailbrake al varios iphones con el firmware 2.0.1 y no me ha aparecido error de este tipo.sí no estas en DFU MODE SIEMPRE TE DA ERROR
Carlos Says: 10.08.08 at 9:40 pm
Hi, wll first i had this problem, then i read in a forum that this “error 6″ is caused because of tagging the “installer” in the Winpwn custom firmware builder, you only have to tag “Cydia” (and Youtube fix if you are not in AT&T) and in Cydia you can install “installer 4.0″ .
I hope this helps you, because it helped me ;)

I had this error with my 8 gig touch. I was in dfu mode for sure and I tried it on two different computers. What worked for me was recompiling the custom firmware image. After that it worked just fine. I hope this helps someone!

r6rider Says: 10.08.08 at 11:59 pm
what exactly do i need to have when creating the custom ipsw?
for example do i need to have the option of debug checked or not?
Do i need to have both cydia and installer 2.0 checked?
I’ve tried it like 20 times n cant make it work
Doug Says: 11.08.08 at 2:08 am
@r6rider, if it is not mentioned in the guide - installerapps.com/jailbreak - then leave it however it is(debug mode)
you don’t NEED both cydia and installer checked. . .you have the choice of picking which one you would like more
JimmyH2o Says: 11.08.08 at 3:41 am
Hello,
After you Click ‘OK’ the ‘Successfully Created IPSW File’ message. There is another step.
Now click ‘Ipwner’ button in WinPwn and browse/select the custom IPSW you just created. Click ‘OK’ after receiving the ‘Your Itunes has been Pwned!’
IF you skipped the last step, the error message will be received.
So….If you have tried the WinPwn process and received the 06, 1600, 1601, or 1602 error messages, you probably skipped this step

I recall with the previous pwn, when people had trouble downloading the 2.0 firmware due to server over loading, people were receiving errors (error 6 rings a bell).
Perhaps this is the same error? Anyone still getting the error try re-downloading the firmware and see if that fixes it.
Angeldi Says: 11.08.08 at 4:31 am
I have a 1st generation iPhone and I had several problems due to a wrong IPSW download.
To fix it, you have to use Firefox to dowload the IPSW (it’s not working thru Safari).
Hope it helps

I didn’t get this message, i follow your tuto step by step with the proper links, and i turn my device in DFU, (for PC it appear in the system tray “New device (DFU)…”)
Human Triangle Says: 11.08.08 at 8:38 am
The only thing that fixed this for me is to not select “Installer 2.0″ in winpwn when I created a custom IPSW file. Then everything worked fine. And as far as I know you will be able to install Installer from Cydia when its officially released for 2.0 firmware.

Ill say something that would of helped me initially. The certain way you can know that your in DFU mode is when your screen is black like its off, but its connected to itunes, and you see it connected on your computer. I tried many of times after thinking I was in DFU mode, this finally worked, counting to ten. I tried using ZI phone to make sure it was in DFU mode, didnt work either. Good luck out there, and hopefully I helped in some way.

KryptonZone Says: 12.08.08 at 4:42 pm
After hours… Plenty of Googling everywhere, I finally got it!
To enter into DFU you have to do it just right. Hold sleep/wake and home together. Let go of sleep/wake when the screen goes off and keep holding on the home button. Keep holding UNTIL the device is recognised and iTunes finds it.
It takes longer than I expected, and after lots and lots of tries, I finally got it! It’s busy installing the firmware as I write!
Finally…
PS: this guide worked well:

Hi
First of all i want to apologize for my english ( from NL)., but it’s not about it.
I alsow had a big problem with errow 6 VERY frustrating ..the problem was i couldn’t put my iphone 3G in the DFU mode, so i google my ass off , to vind an answer for easy way to put your iphone in the DFU mode ,and i found one…..YEAH BABY…. there is one guy who explainded VERY simpel you DON’T even have to count…..IT WORKED like a charm hier is wat he explaind .
Easier way to get DFU Mode
I have found an easier way to get into DFU Mode. Hopefully this hasn’t already been posted but if it has apologies. Ok, so you have got your custom firmware ready and you now need to get DFU Mode going but keep getting Error 6 messages???? Ok here is an easier way than counting to ten, take off five, jump up and down and fart at the dog.
Make sure itunes is up and running and you Ipod is NOT connected by USB and volume is turned up on your computer.
1) Power off your Ipod and then connect it to your USB cable.
2) Listen to the ‘connect’ sound and when you hear that, press and hold the HOME and POWER button and keep them pressed.
3) When you hear the ‘disconnect’ sound, let go of the POWER button.
4) When you hear the ‘connect’ sound again, let go of the HOME button and you should now be in DFU Mode.
As long as you have followed these instructions then you WILL be in DFU Mode.
5) Carry on with JB’ing
Again, if this has been posted before, apologies. Am sheet at searching.

hello
what helped me with error 6 was that you have make sure in WINPWN
that step 8 is always done before every restore.
8 - After it creates your custom firmware it is time to Pwn iTunes. Click the ‘iPwner’ button and you should be told that ‘iTunes has been Pwned’
to execute step 8 you have to build your firmware first. this was the only way for me ,,
George Says: 14.08.08 at 7:14 pm
Hey It happened to me many times…and I know that I was in DFU mode and not in Restore mode….I tried about 6 times which is a lot of work considering you have to restore to an original firmware before attempting the unlock again….after reading comments by others I tried increasing the root partition size to 1000 and selected both installer and cydia and it worked flawless! So if it’s not working, I recommend following all the steps of the tutorial, but increasing the partition size….BUT most importantly make sure your phone is in DFU mode.
Also just to be clear I was not getting error 6 until iTunes actually started to load the firmware, which is towards the end of the process.

I am new here. I recently purchased an unlock 1.1.4 iphone that had crached last night due to a\
installing an APP. Then after my phone rebooted it just stuck on the apple whit logo foreever. had done a hard reset with holding the
power + home button for 25 seconds, still same thing. The only way to get out of that was to recover the phone, since I had no backup made in Itunes it went to the original Apple firmware 2.0.1
after that it asked me to insert the At&t sim card isntead of my T-mobile.
Well now I would liek to unlock my phone again. Well now I came across Pwnage tool and Winpwn.
I do not know which one I should use. But after I unlock it I would definately liek to get installer 4, don’t know what cydia is.
Has anyone use Pwnage tool vs Winpwn? or vice versa
From this site before I do anything I’ve learnt that while using Winpwn
increase partition to 1000
then check cydia and uncheck installer
then since im on tmobile, I check activate and unlock banded
Do I really need to activate this since it was already activated with 1.1.4?
Then after all this make sure im DFU mode with itunes..
if anything above it differnt than me that you recommend please let me know.
I’m just a bit aprehensive before it try it
thanks

its happens as soon as the installer says extracting no matter what firmware it is, custom, or regular it totaly ignores my requests and shoots that error. Another thing I’ll note is everytime I open up itunes a box that comes up and says “itunes was not installed properly. if you want to burn cds, you need to reinstall itunes.
sombasan Says: 15.08.08 at 11:16 pm
correction. It actually happens after the extraction, and as soon as it says “preparing Iphone for restore” then it pops up with the error.

This gave me grief for over a week, watched the vid, did it just like he said. The screen stayed “off” but iTunes said it was in DFU Mode. I re did the Winpwned thing, first time no error 6.
Cheers, thanks for the simple yet helpful vid.
