George Hotz, better known as Geohot has released a jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS known as purplera1n. It’s a very simple, yet rough, beta software and only for Windows right now. We’ve got a guide right here if you’re daring to try it, but I’d wait till a Dev Team release.

Step 1
Download Purplera1n from here. Windows only for right now.

Step 2
Connect your iPhone and have the latest version of iTunes installed and running.

Step 3
Run purplera1n and click make it ra1n.

Step 4
Let it run it’s automated course

Step 5
Once the iPhone has finished rebooting, you’ll find a new app named Freeze. Run this and press Install Cydia and let it run it’s course. If you don’t have Cydia on the SpringBoard after it’s done reboot your phone and reinstall Cydia.

Step 6
Enjoy your iPhone 3GS jailbroken. Be aware not all apps work, one most notably is WinterBoard is reported to not work with it as of yet.

Windows

Step 1
Bring up the Run menu by pressing Windows key + R. Enter %temp% into the box and press enter. This will take Explorer to your temporary folder for your account. Make sure to organize this by date modified, most recent being first.

You must now be able to view hidden files, to do this in Vista, from the Organize menu at the top of Explorer select Folder and Search Options. Once you’re in there select View hidden files and folders and hit ok.

Step 2
Create a new folder on the desktop called Pwnage, place your iPhone 3GS 3.0 firmware there.

Step 3
Lauch iTunes.

Step 4
Connect your iPhone 3GS and restore your device by Shift+Clicking the restore button and select your 3.0 firmware.

Step 5
While the restore is taking place, keep your eye on the Explorer windows for a folder to appear with a name similar to Per518D.tmp. When it appears, select it, Control+C to copy, and Control+P to paste it into the Pwnage folder you made earlier.

You must copy the file fast, as iTunes will delete it soon!

Step 6
Put your iPhone in DFU mode.

Turn off your iPhone.

Press the Home and Sleep/Wake button and hold for 10 seconds.

Release the Sleep/Wake button and continue to hold the Home button until iTunes pops up.

Step 7
Shift+Click restore and use the same 3.0 firmware as before.

Step 8
Just like step 5, while it’s restoring watch the temp folder for a folder named PerD112.tmp. Copy and paste it into your Pwnage folder before iTunes deletes it.

Step 9
Sit back and wait for that iPhone 3GS Jailbreak tool.

Mac

Step 1
Launch Finder from the dock. Select Go to Folder from the Go menu and type /tmp in the box and press Go. This will open the tmp folder. Make sure to organize it by date modified, most recent being first.

Step 2
Make a new folder and call it Pwnage and place your iPhone 3GS 3.0 firmware in there.

Step 3
Open iTunes.

Step 4
Hold down the option key and click the Restore button, select your iPhone 3GS firmware and Restore.

Step 5
While the restore is in progress, watch the /tmp folder for a new folder to appear with a similar name to PersonalizedRestoreBundle.rCWW7jtHro. When it does appear, select it, press Command+C to copy, and then paste it using Command+P into your Pwnage folder.

Step 6
Put your iPhone in DFU mode.

Turn off your iPhone.

Press the Home and Sleep/Wake button and hold for 10 seconds.

Release the Sleep/Wake button and continue to hold the Home button until iTunes pops up.

Step 7
Option+Click restore and use the same 3.0 firmware as before.

Step 8
Just like step 5, while it’s restoring watch the temp folder for a folder named PersonalizedRestoreBundle.yoM6c2aLdH. Copy and paste it into your Pwnage folder before iTunes deletes it.

Step 9
Sit back and wait for that iPhone 3GS Jailbreak tool.

5 – Burp

This application lets you take pictures of your food from your iPhone and upload it to this application for others users of this application to see. It’s cool to see what other iPhone owners are eating. . .for some reason.

4 – Collage

Collage is sort of like Burp. . .but for non-food pictures. The UI is much better Burp. . .and it also lets you vote up, vote down, or even comment on pictures uploaded by the iPhone community.

3 – StreetFlow

This application uses the Locate feature of the iPhone to comment on local restaurants around you. Here you can comment on either the entire place or specific dishes. You can also share pictures of the food for everyone else to see.

2 – Wallpaper

Share your wallpaper with hundreds of other iPhone owners. This application will autos scroll through random shared wallpapers until you pick one. Once you pick one you can either set it as your wallpaper from here, comment, report, and add it to ‘your gallery’. You can save a few for later use(or sharing). I got one of my favorite wallpapers from this very application.

1 – MobileScrobbler

Last.fm is a well established Web 2.0. . .and this application lets you utilize your Last.fm account right from your iPhone and iPod Touch.

Bonus – iFob

I haven’t personally used this application but I hear great things about it. This is a social network for iPhone owners near you. Not only can you see who is around you, but you can add them to your friends list, and you can even send them messages.

It’s nice to know the average MPG that your vehicle gets. . .especially since the older cars don’t do this for you already.

For those that want to customize the function of double tapping the home button. This is your application. Change it so that when you double tap home, it will open a specific application that you want.

45 – BossTool

When you run out of space to install applications. . .BossTool is here to help. This will move all of your applications to another partition(media). Once you do this you can install hundreds more(depending on the size of your device).

44 – InstaFresh

If you don’t want to wait 1-5 minutes until Installer finishes refreshing it’s sources(which is done every 12 hours). . .then this application is for you! This will let you set the time interval between refreshes(or not even at all).

43 – SugarTracker

This is very useful if you or someone close has Diabetes. With this application you can monitor and track their sugar/insulin levels. It even calculates report averages.

42 – colloQ

This is a community updated version of Colloquy. . .which is an IRC client for your iPhone or iPod Touch.

41 – VNsea

Now you can control your computer from your iPhone or iPod Touch. Install a VNC server on the one you want to control and setup the details in your device.

40 – My eBay

39 – Flashlight

This is a great application if you need a quick. . .and bright. . .source of light.

38 – iCrossword

This is a great portable Crossword ‘client’ for your iPhone and iPod Touch. Now if they would only release new ‘puzzles’.

37 – PuzzleManiak

You can’t beat 25+ puzzle games with online leader boards.

36 – HistoryDL

HistoryDL lets you go through the history of MobileSafar. . .and download things directly to your iPhone. Download images, music, videos, text and more. . .

35 – VoiceNotes

Record brief messages to your iPhone for future reference.

34 – NetChess

What is better than online chess?

33 – FiveDice

This was one of the first games released on the iPhone and iPod Touch and it has done well and holding up over time.

32 – Pianist

Play a piano right on your device. Scroll left and right to get to all of the keys.

31 – Poof

Use this application to hide all of the icons that you don’t need to see. Great tool for cleaning up your home screen.

30 – Wallpaper

This is 1 the 2 great ‘web 2.0′ applications for the iPhone community. This shares everyone’s wallpaper. . .and allows anyone to not only download other wallpapers, but also lets you comment on the set of shared wallpapers.

29 – Collage

This is web 2.0 application 2 of 2. This one lets you share specific photos(of yours). . .browse photos(of the community). . .and even vote whether or not you like it or not.

28 – ThemeBuilder
I haven’t reviewed this application yet but this is a great one. This allows you to not only create new themes. . .but also edit a previously downloaded theme.

27 – Books

Everyone(at least I do) needs an eBook reader. Reading books on your iPhone and iPod Touch is really nice.

26 – NES/GBA/Genesis/PSX

News of the first emulator(NES) for the iPhone spread like wildfire. . .and they just keep coming. Even the PSX emulator had an update recently giving it the ability to play most games(and well too).

25 – Drummer

This application got famous for being featured in the music video ‘iBand’. . .click here to see how cool this application can be.

24 – Tetris

Touch and Slide Tetris FTW!

23 – iSolitaire

Much like the Tetris game above. . .there’s just something about moving the cards around like that.

22 – Touchpad Pro

Based off the VNsea code. . .install TightVNC onto your machine and then you can control your mouse cursor right from the iPhone screen.

21 – iRadio

Streaming radio. . .no matter where you are. With hundreds(literally) of genres to choose from. . .there’s emough music for everyone.

20 – BossPrefs

Toggle your services on or off right from one location. It also gives you a customizable dock at the bottom.

19 – Stack

Add some eye candy to the dock on your iPhone and iPod Touch. Set the stack to come straight up. . .or curved to the left.

18 – NOIZ2SA

The first 2d side scrolling shooter for the iPhone. This game had me addicted for days. . .it gets really difficult toward the end. Each level has a boss too.

17 – rRootage
Sort of like the 2d shooter above. . .but this one gives you ‘bombs’ to protect you. And you just fight one boss after another.

16 – Pool

1P vs 2P and 1P vs CPU. How cool would online play be?

15 – Yeti3D

The first FPS for the iPhone and iPod Touch. I hear Quake and Doom is being ported right now. . .I think this one will keep the FPS fans busy until those are released.

14 – Sketches

This is like Paint + Etch-a-sketch. Export your drawings to twitter, email, or save it for later.

13 – Categories

Organize all of those application in set categories. I used this a lot until multiple home pages came out. I still have 2 categories for misc applications/icons.

12 – Apollo

The first native instant messenger application for the iPhone. With thousands of thousands still using this. I think this is the #1 most downloaded application. . .ever.

11 – Tap Tap Revolution

This was another one of those great applications that was released very early. There is even a ‘Guitar Hero’ mod for this application. It can even use some of your own music to play the game.

10 – Customize

This is the application that lets you change any and every little thing on your device. Don’t like the battery icon? Customize it. Don’t like the wifi/edge/power icons? Customize it. With more and more people releasing ‘image packs’. . .this application just gets better and better.

09 – Summerboard

Much like the Customize application, this one lets you change the way your iPhone and iPod Touch looks. Change the icons, wallpaper, dock, and more with this one.

08 – Caterpiller

This application adds another section in your settings area. In there you can set a plethora of misc settings. You could look at this as ‘Settings 2.0′. . .it’s what Apple should have let you do from the beginning. This is a great application.

07 – MobileCast

Another feature that should have been there by default. This application lets you download your audio and video podcasts on-the-go. You don’t have to sync your podcasts through iTunes anymore.

06 – Snapture

This is like the Camera Pro application. . .but free. I imagine most of these features will be added(to the stock camera app). . .but until then, we have Snapture.

05 – smartRSS

I recently switched from MobileRSS to smartRSS. The GUI of this application is much better. Making it much easier to control.

04 – MxTube

Download your favorite YouTube videos for playback where ever you are. You don’t even need to be connected to the internet(great for iPod Touch owners). . .especially if you don’t want to use up your data plan watching YouTube videos over and over.

03 – Twinkle or MobileTwitter

Both of these applications are great for your Twitter usage. Don’t use all of your text messages on Twitter! Twinkle even uses your location to tweet with people around you. MobileTwitter has an ‘auto refresh’ feature which is great.

02 – Fring

I haven’t had a chance to test this application yet, but I hear great things. This is your Skype application you have been waiting for.

01 – iPhysics

I have to say this is the greatest game ported to the iPhone. The community really got behind this application with the dozens and dozends of custom level packs for this game.

10) Keep It On

There really isn’t any reason turn it off at the end of the day. As long as it is in ’sleep mode’(without playing music) it turns all network activity off. The device actually uses a lot of the batter just to turn it on. . .even more than if you had just left it on.

9) Turn Sound Effects Off

You can go into Settings -> General -> Sound Effects and turn it off. Or at least set it to either Speaker or Headphones. . .not Both(which it is by default).

8) Turn EQ Off

You can go into Settings -> Music -> EQ and turn it off. This will use less resources to monitor the EQ.

7) Less Email Addresses

You can go into Settings -> Mail and disable a few of your email accounts. The less email addresses your iPhone or iPod Touch has to check, the more battery life you will have. This is because of network activity usage.

7a) Check Email Less Often

You can go into Settings -> Mail -> Auto-Check and set this to manual. . .or at least Every hour(as opposed to 15/30 minutes). Just like above, the your device has to connect to Wifi/Edge the longer your battery will last.

6) Set Auto-Lock

You can go into Settings -> General -> Auto-Lock and set it to 1-3 minutes(I have mine set to 1). The longer your screen is turned on the more it uses the battery. Either do this or get used to putting it into ’sleep mode’ immediately after usage.

5) Turn BlueTooth Off

You can either do this via Settings or in the BossPrefs application.

4) Keep Brightness Dim

You can go into Settings -> Brightness and move the bar on the top toward the left. Go as far to the left as you can(without sacrificing quality). The less bright the screen has to be the longer your battery will last.

4a) Turn Auto-Brightness Off

You can go into Settings -> Brightness and turn Auto-Brightness off. This will not only prevent the device from increasing the brightness level. It will also use less resources. . .since it doesn’t have to monitor anything.

3) Turn Edge Off

Much like BlueTooth, you can do this from either Settings or the 3rd party application BossPrefs.

2) Turn SSH Off

You can go into the application BossPrefs, Services, or the default SSH icon and turn this service on/off. This runs in the background when any network activity is available. This is one of the biggest reasons people who Jailbreak their iPhones and iPod Touches have very poor battery life.

1) Turn WiFi Off

Even more than SSH, WiFi really uses your battery. Paired with MobileSafari browsing, your battery will not even last 3 hours. I normally just put the device into sleep mode, and it turns of WiFi automatically. But, when music is playing WiFi is on, and it will deplete your battery with the quickness.

This is a lot of things to monitor. . .but if you get into the habit of turning services on/off(much like turning off a light when you leave the room). . .you could go an extra 2-3 days between charging sessions.

Bonus
At least once per month try and use all of the battery life in your iPhone and iPod Touch. The lower you get the battery level the better. Then recharge your device to 100%. This will ‘reset’ your battery to the best of it’s ability. The more you recharge your device, without letting the battery die completely, the lower your ‘battery capacity’ is. Doing this once per month(or even once per week) will keep your battery in tip top shape.

Before the App Store is launched I wanted to do my top 5 favorite games for the iPhone. There has been some very cool games released so far. . .but these have certainly stood out from the rest.

5 – iSolitaire

This was the first game I thought about when I first jailbroke my iPod Touch. . .and with the ability to slide the cards around. That’s just Epic!

4 – iZoo

Everyone loves Bejeweled. iZoo may not be the ‘official’ game. . .but it does have a ’skin/theme’ that makes it look just like Bejeweled.

3 – Tetris

There has been 3-4 different attempts at making the best game of tetris on the iPhone. . .I have to say this one is the best.

2 – iPhysics

This is a killer port of the game ‘Crayon Physics’. . .this game is sure to keep you busy for hours.

1 – NOIZ2SA

I have been addicted to this game for the past 2 weeks. . .and I am stuck on level 4. Can you get any further?

Bonus – NES
Some would say this is the best ‘game’ since it allows to play soooo many classic games right on your iPhone and iPod Touch.

For the best results. . .turn the brightness down. . .and turn off ‘auto brightness’.
