Broken iPhone or iPod Touch

Whether you have jailbroken your device or not. . .sometimes it just needs to be restored(much like computers need to be formatted from time to time).

The question is. . .What do I do?

Here I will go through the process of restoring your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Note – Restoring your device will clear all of your data(contacts, apps, media, etc). This will also update your device to the latest firmware.

DFU Mode

Sometimes you are unable to even your iPhone or iPod Touch doesn’t even boot. In this case it is recommend that you put the device in ‘DFU Mode’. DFU stands for ‘Device Firmware Update’, and what it does is allow you to boot into ’safe mode’. . .basically.

Follow these steps to put your iPhone or iPod Touch into DFU Mode. . .

  • Turn off your device
  • Push AND hold the Home AND Power buttons
  • When you see the Apple logo. . .Let go of the Power button
  • Connect your device to the computer and open iTunes

iTunes should tell you that the iPhone or iPod Touch is in ‘restore mode’.

Restore

If you have your device connected to the computer(with iTunes open), you should see a ‘restore button’ right when you open iTunes. Click the ‘restore button’ and you’ll see iTunes begin to restore your iPhone or iPod Touch. Once it is done iTunes will tell you that your device is ready and you can disconnect it from the computer.
